       Saxophone merupakan alat musik yang masih tergolong dalam keluarga woodwind, biasanya alat musik ini terbuat dari logam yang dimainkan dengan cara ditiup dengan menggunakan single–reed. Saxophone ditemukan di Belgia pada tahun 1840, oleh seorang pemain clarinet dan pembuat alat musik yang bernama Adolphe Sax .

Saxophone saat ini populer dimainkan dalam permainan Jazz, beberapa nama pemain saxofon International masa kini yang terkenal adalah Dave Koz, Kenny G, Richard Elliot, Eric Marienthal, Sadao Watanabe,dan Kenny Garrett. Bagi Anda yang berminat untuk belajar musik Saxophone sebaiknya anda ketahui terlebih dahulu bahwa dalam permainan alat musik ini terdapat beberapa teknik dasar yang harus dipelajari, diantaranya adalah cara memegang saxophone, posisi saat bermain, teknik pernapasan, teknik fingering, teknik embosur, dan teknik peniupan.

Berikut ini penjelasan singkat mengenai teknik dasar bermain Saxophone:

• Memegang alat musik saxophone harus dilakukan dengan cara yang benar agar jari – jari bisa bergerak dengan leluasa saat menjangkau kunci nada, seperti posisi jari tengah, jari telunjuk, dan jari manis baik tangan kiri maupun kanan harus disesuaikan tepat pada permukaan katup nada.

• Pernafasan yang baik adalah dengan menggunakan sistem pernafasan diafragmatis. Hal ini dikarenakan volume udara yang didapat bisa lebih besar dan kuat jika dibandingkan dengan pernafasan paru – paru.

• Posisi Bermain saxophone sebaiknya dilakukan dengan sewajar mungkin baik dalam sikap berdiri maupun duduk, jangan terlalu tegang, namun juga jangan terlalu santai.

• Teknik Embosur adalah teknik untuk mengatur posisi bibir dan gigi pada mouthpiece. Bentuk ambosur yang baik adalah dengan meletakkan gigi atas pada bagian atas dari mouthpiece 

• Pada alat musik saxophone petunjuk penggunaan kunci nada dan peletakan jari - jari tangan akan diberikan petunjuk berupa tanda-tanda huruf, titik ( ) dan lingkaran kecil ( ).

• Tekhnik Peniupan yang digunakan dalam bermain saxophone disebut dengan Meniup dengan udara panas, akan tetapi agar menghasilkan suara yang indah dibutuhkan juga dukungan ambosur yang benar serta tenaga yang relatif kuat.

Teknik Dasar ini akan dipelajari lebih lengkap jika Anda belajar di kursus musik Saxophone, ada beberapa sekolah musik yang menawarkan kursus musik namun di Indonesia yang cukup populer adalah sekolah musik Yamaha.
